Opera Gold – About us

Opera Gold is the opera company of Goldsmiths, University of London, England.

We are based in the college in New Cross, south of the river: next door to maritime Greenwich, and across the water from the shiny new-money district of Canary Wharf.    map

The company stages a major opera in June every year, with rehearsals starting the previous October.

Rehearsals take place inside the college, on Thursdays from 4.30pm–6pm in the Great Hall or Room 167.

Performances are staged, with a full orchestra, performed in original languages, and take place inside the Great Hall.

Previous productions include Blow's Venus and Adonis (2004); Purcell's Dido and Aeneas (2005); Mozart's Die Zauberflöte (2006); Bizet's Carmen (2007, curtain call pictured); Britten's Peter Grimes (2008); Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro (2009); and Verdi's Rigoletto (2010).

Our 2011 production will be announced soon...

Our cast consists of present and past college members, and occasional guest performers in principal roles. We are always happy to welcome chorus members from inside or outside the college.

Internationally feted soprano Nan Christie (pictured above, in red jacket) produces and directs, and Tim Hooper (pictured above right) conducts .
